All those involved with CURUFC are devastated to learn of the death of LXs Head Coach Gareth McComb. Gareth had been at the heart of player development at Grange Road since the 2016/17 season, supporting a large number of young players as they progressed through the club and in many cases eventually achieved a Blue.
Gareth’s even temper and enthusiasm for the game were huge assets to the club. He calmly endured some difficult defeats, but was always magnanimous and humble in victory. Most recently, he coached the LXs to their outstanding win over the Greyhounds at Iffley Road in March and he was also part of the coaching team with the CURUFC men at Twickenham in the Varsity Match two weeks later.
Gareth will be remembered with great love and affection by CURUFC players past and present, as well as the coaching and administrative team involved with running rugby at Grange Road. As Head of Sport at St John’s School and a former Captain of Cambridge RFC, his death is a great loss to the Cambridge sporting community and all of our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.
