CURUFC is saddened to hear that blue and former England International full back Tony Jorden died aged 76, on 20th October.
Tony was born in Radlett, Hertfordshire on 28th January 1947 and educated at Monmouth School. He came up to Fitzwilliam in 1967 and won blues in both rugby and cricket in 1968 and 1969. He made his first International appearance against France in the 1970 Five Nations. He made seven appearances between 1970-75 and scored 22 points.
After leaving Cambridge Tony returned to Grange Road in 1972 as part of the Cambridge Past & Present team that defeated the Barbarians. He contributed three conversions and a penalty to the final score line of 37-14. His rugby career saw him also playing for the Barbarians, Blackheath, Bedford, Eastern Counties and London, as well as coaching Wasps and London Division. He also served on the RFU Committee.
Said England teammate Bob Taylor, who captained Tony on his debut and played alongside him as flanker: “Tony was one of the early players who wanted to play an expansive game. He was a good goal kicker but he also wanted to run with the ball. He was an excellent all-rounder and teammate, a great guy who will be very much missed.”
