The Sun Gods truly smiled on the annual CURUFC Old Rugby Blues golf match against Oxford, as the largest turnout to date of 18 players on each side locked horns in a Fourball-better-ball team match. The course at Denham was lush and immaculate, the greens fast, the lunch superb as ever and a great day was had by all. The result is secondary to the conviviality of the occasion, however all agreed that playing against the Auld Foe adds a welcome competitive piquancy, fuelled by a few glasses of wine over lunch before the shotgun start after lunch . So a ‘W’ by the Light Blues of 4.5 to 3.5 just added a further layer of satisfaction for the Light Blue team, and continues our current ascendancy over Oxford at Rugby and Rowing.
‘Prof’ Justin Davies (First Blue ’94) and Stuart Burns (’92) triumphed in their match, as did Lloyd Davies (’91) and Peter Combe (’84). Ali Meadows and ‘rookie’ Paul Reed (’89) were also successful, as was fellow ‘rookie’ Gordon Wood (’74), playing with stalwart Mark Rosser (’72) who is a CURUFC regular at this event. Our half point came from Damian Hopley (’92), paired with Tim Paterson-Brown (’83) in a very close encounter against Phil de Glanville and Andy Moore from Oxford. ‘Supervet’ Pat Briggs (’62) and Jeremy Hamp (’68) played in a non-competitive match in parallel to the main match but both enjoyed taking part in the day as our nod to inclusivity.
However the real winner was the occasion. The weather was simply stunning, and the feedback from both sides was unequivocally positive.
