Cambridge University Rugby Club are thrilled to announce the appointment of Mike Gillick as Women’s Head Coach for the 26/27 season. Mike has extensive experience both playing and coaching in Cambridgeshire and beyond — from playing with the Leicester Tigers Academy and Championship rugby with Birmingham Moseley, to coaching various community departments and most recently the Shelford Colts, with whom he won an impressive three county cup finals. Here’s what he said about his appointment at CURUFC:
“I’m incredibly proud to have been appointed Head Coach of the University of Cambridge Women’s Rugby Union Football Club and I’m excited to begin working with such a talented group of players and staff.”
Mike spoke about his ethos and the energy he hopes to bring to CURUFC, supporting all players and levels of rugby.
“At the centre of my coaching philosophy is a belief in building people-first environments. I want players to feel challenged, supported and genuinely valued. I believe high standards and enjoyment should exist together, and that the best environments are ones where people feel safe to grow, compete and express themselves.
My aim is to help create a programme with a clear identity and aligned vision across the coaching group, while recognising that different coaches bring different strengths and methods. I want us to create an environment that develops and engages players of all abilities — stretching those who want to excel, while also building confidence and competence in those newer to the game. I’m passionate about building a sustainable culture and game model that can evolve with the group while remaining accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved.”
With a wealth of experience, Mike is keen to foster a supportive yet competitive environment, developing each and every player, and producing a team that is stronger than ever.
“Most importantly, I want this programme to be known for caring deeply about its people while driving high standards in everything we do. I won’t ever ask someone to give more than I’m willing to give myself, and I’m excited to work alongside both players and staff to build something the whole club can be proud of.”
Cambridge women are really excited for a new era of rugby at CURUFC with Mike at the helm. After two years of Oxford having secured the win in the Women’s Varsity Match, Mike hopes to drive performance and ultimately bring the trophy back into the hands of the Light Blues.
