MEN’S RUGBY
The CURUFC men’s team has been in existence since 1871 when they played a crucial role in drawing up the laws of the game of Rugby Union, which were officially adopted by the RFU in 1872.
The three men’s teams are the Blues (1st XV), the LX Club (2nd XV), and the Centurions (3rd XV).
The Blues don’t compete in a league, instead playing a range of traditional fixtures against various clubs including the armed forces, touring teams, other universities and annual fixtures against the likes of Cambridge RFC and Trinity College Dublin. The Blues finish their season with the Varsity Match. Following the 142nd match in 2024, Oxford have 62 wins, and Cambridge maintain the lead with 66. 14 games have ended in draws.
The LX club play in a BUCS league with an expanded fixture list including friendlies to support the development of the Centurions in the build up to their Varsity matches.
About the Men’s Blues
The Blues play a range of traditional fixtures against various clubs including the armed forces, touring teams, other universities and annual fixtures against the likes of Cambridge RFC and Trinity College Dublin. They typically play games on a Wednesday evening at 7pm under the floodlights at Grange Road.
Their head coach is James Shanahan who has been with the club since 2015 and is also Head Coach at Blackheath Rugby Club who play in National 1, the third tier of English rugby.
