With the new season underway at Grange Road, we thought it was a good opportunity to write to you to tell you about some exciting new developments happening at the club. Following the success of the Red Lion 150 campaign, the University made an ongoing financial commitment to the majority of ground and H&S costs. This engagement with the University has progressed further to the extent that we now have formal University support for a new and exciting project to upgrade the pitch and facilities, including the finance needed to obtain planning.
With over 120 players registered with the club this season, we now put out six teams on a regular basis. One grass pitch is simply not enough for all these teams to train and to play competitive matches. We also want to continue our support for college rugby and particularly for the Cuppers competition. The only solution to this problem is to replace the current pitch with a new, synthetic, artificial grass pitch (AGP). We also require significant improvements to be made to the pavilion.
With the support of the University, we now have a unique one-off opportunity to bring Grange Rd into the 21st century. With the full backing of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Deborah Prentice, the Club is working with the University Development Office to seek support from Cambridge sporting alumni to make our ground a centre for field sports. Together we have produced a Grange Road Ground Vision document which we’d like to share with you now before it goes to a wider audience.
Our President, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, the former Vice Chancellor, has made it his personal mission to see this project through and will be approaching some major donors on our behalf.
