Every year, each of the 30 RFU Constituent Bodies is invited to a nominate a “Valued Volunteer”. This year, CURFU nominated our club oracle Austin Jessop.
Austin has been involved with rugby at Cambridge University since 1972, as a player, coach and administrator. He has worked tirelessly behind the scenes at Grange Road in support of University and College rugby. Through the years he has overseen finance, ground management, health and safety, competitions, sponsorships, fund raising, alumni relations, ticketing, the organisation of the Varsity Matches and just about every other activity which is needed to help student rugby thrive at Cambridge. He has been at the forefront of ensuring that student rugby is fit for the future and has lived and breathed the RFU’s values.
Austin, along with his partner Penny, received a tour of the Allianz Twickenham Stadium, had his picture taken with the President of the RFU in the Council Box, attended a lunch & post-match function, was presented with a certificate and got to watch England play Italy from the RFU Council Box.
Deborah Griffin (RFU Senior Vice-President) hosted the CURFRU table with other attendees including Daniel Pett (CURFU Chair), Jess (CURUFC Chair), Roger Mosey (CURFU President) and Dick Tyler (CURFU council member).
