Ben Gompels hailed Cambridge University’s squad as fantastic after their record-breaking 56-11 win over Oxford University in the Men’s Jefferies Varsity Match at Saracens’ StoneX Stadium.
Tries from David Holdroyd, Ben Gompels, Charles Kantolinna, Fergus Hughes, George Bland, Makoto Tosa, Jamie Farndale and 21 points from Jamie Benson, the best individual haul since 1975, secured the Light Blues a memorable win.
It was an irresistible display, and captain Gompels said: “We thought, and I said to boys before, that we’d got the edge, but I didn’t know we had that much of an edge until it came in.
“It is absolutely fantastic to get the win. Normally in Varsity everyone under fires, but everyone was absolutely fired up.
“It was a hell of a day, and great to get the trophy. It was a record win and a record points haul for Jamie Benson, so it doesn’t get much better than that.
“The boys worked really hard. We knew they would come at us at scrum time, and we mitigated that pretty well, and I just thought the boys were fantastic and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
