We hope you had a great Christmas break and enjoyed some downtime. Here at CURUFC we managed to take some time off before we come back into Lent term and start ramping up very quickly towards the Varsity Matches which are only eight weeks away on March 2nd.

We’ll be bringing you regular updates between now and then to keep you updated on how the club is progressing in the build-up to our games against O*ford, including player profiles, match reports and a dip into the archives to sample some of the great games from yesteryear.
Building to Varsity: What’s in store
Lent term brings some very exciting games to the club. The Women’s Blues are straight in at the deep end, kicking off 2024 with an away match against Oxford at Iffley Road on Weds 17th January before welcoming the Dark Blues back to Grange Road the following week on Weds 24th. We’d love to see as many of you as possible at both games. The BUCS matches always provide a good indicator of how both teams are building into Varsity.
Women’s Rugby: Don’t miss the 88s Match on 16th Feb
We also have the annual 88s match taking place under the lights on Friday 16th February where the Blues will be taking on an invitational team as their final match pre-Varsity. For the uninitiated, the 88s match is an annual game started 3 years ago to celebrate the start of Women’s rugby at CURUFC which began back in 1988.
Former Blues coach, Jack Baird, will be inviting a team of players from around the country including some ex-Blues to give the team a final big test. You can buy tickets for the game here though anyone with a ticket for Varsity will be let in free. We’re expecting a big turnout with Old Girls, local schools and rugby clubs in attendance to see the Blues off in style before they head to StoneX.
Men’s Rugby: The Armed Forces return to Grange Road
The Men’s Blues will also be enjoying the Friday Night Lights as they kick off their year with a decent test against Bristol Uni who play in BUCS Premier South. We have 2 Bristol University alumni in captain, Ben Gompels (who also went on to play for Bristol Bears), and back rower Harry Jones who will both be looking forward to taking on their old club.
We’re then straight into our traditional games against the RAF (Weds 31st Jan), Army (Weds 7th Feb) and Navy (Feb 14th) all at Grange Road. Please come and support the boys in their run up to varsity.
The Blues will be welcoming Trinity Western University RFC over from Canada for their final match before taking on Oxford on Feb 21st. It’s the first time CURUFC have taken on Trinity Western and should prove to be a great game against a team who recently came 5th in the Canadian Rugby Championship.
We hope to see you at the club whenever you can and if not, we’ll see you at the Varsity Matches in 8 weeks time!
