At 15:00 on Saturday the 28th February, the Men’s Squad ran out to face Oxford in the 144th Varsity Match. The men’s fixture was closely fought contest, particularly in the first half which ended 15-10 to Oxford.
However, the Dark Blues ultimately seized control in the latter stages, adding three tries to extend their advantage and securing a 37–25 victory.
Nate Bottomley, Men’s Secretary, gave the following report:
Last Saturday saw the Men’s Varsity Match, which sadly ended 37-25 to O*ford.
The match began at a high tempo, with both sides trading blows in a tightly contested opening period. O*ford took an early 5-0 lead, but the Blues responded well, working their way into the game and keeping the scoreline close. By the half-time break, Cambridge trailed 15-10, remaining well within striking distance as they headed into the tunnel.The second half saw a spirited effort from the Light Blues as they looked to overturn the deficit. Patrick Shrimpton crossed the line for a try, showing great strength to bundle over and keep Cambridge in the hunt. However, O*ford’s maul dominance and clinical finishing in the latter stages allowed them to pull away. Cambridge pushed for a late surge including a try from Lewis Cooper, making his record 10 tries from 7 matches, which showed the team’s fighting sprit and relentless effort, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Although the trophy sadly didn’t return with us to Grange Road this year, the development of 15 new Blues provides a strong foundation for the future of CURUFC.
