The LXs club will be disappointed not to have come away from Hertford rugby club with a victory, although they will be equally pleased to have dug in for a hard earned draw. The match was played in difficult conditions, against an older and more streetwise opposition, and as a result the LXs struggled to hold on to the ball for much of the game. The lack of continuity allowed Hertford to control the pace, attacking the LXs in both scrums and mauls.
Despite a fairly lacklustre first half, the LXs did just enough to stay within a score of Hertford (half time score 17-12) and they emerged from the break with more of a spring in their step. By playing more direct rugby, and with greater accuracy at the breakdown, the LXs managed to impose themselves, although Hertford were just as enthusiastic, earning a penalty try after a series of scrums on the LXs five metre line.
The LXs edged their way back into the game with a brave score from Michael Mortimore, who had to leave the field following his try, and the final twenty minutes saw both sides pushing hard for the win. With ten minutes to go, Leo Buizza went over for the LXs, calmly converted by George Williams. This late try left the score 31 - 31, and the final ten minutes saw both teams throw caution to the wind as they pushed for a final scoring opportunity. Unfortunately, neither side could find a way through and the match ended with honours even.
This was an excellent test for the LXs and they now turn their attention to the Varsity match against the Oxford Greyhounds on Wednesday 3rd December at Grange Road (KO 2.30pm). Many thanks to Hertford RFC for their hospitality, and very best wishes to Hertford clubman and second team captain Ben Basely on his retirement.
